In 2000 Gingi returns to Mysore in the new millennium to practice with Pattabhi Jois. The old shala can only hold 12 people and on the first day of practice, he finds himself facing a wall with no room to manoeuvre. Gingi feels a great sense of history and excitement of being at the ashtanga source (despite bumping his head against the wall on each sun salutation). Jois is a tough task-master but his presence is powerful. For a month he makes Gingi come at the end of the session so often it was just the two of them – and the cleaner. “He was breaking my ego. I wanted to be there at the break of dawn with the pros not with the cleaner at the end of the session!
