The Beyond Asana – The Inner Path of Teaching Yoga course lies at the heart of our YA accredited 300-hour Level 2 training and it is a mandatory part of our programme. The course is designed to elevate, inspire and evolve you as a yoga teacher. It spans six days as hybrid or virtual only course, covering a broad spectrum of topics from ethics and trauma sensitivity to theming, meditation, chakras and much more.

This 60-hour core module is central to our exciting 300-hour programme providing a practical and inspiring foundation to the programme. It is one of three compulsory modules on our Level 2 programme. You are free to choose your other modules to make up your 300-hours, effectively creating your own tailor-made course based on your own passions – find out more about the entire programme here

You can do the Beyond Asana – The Inner Path of Teaching Yoga at any stage of your training, so if you want to start with any of the other modules you can. We do recommend that you do this module early on in your training journey with us, especially if you are a new teacher as it can help you navigate through what you may wish to study as part of the programme.

Course Overview

The Beyond Asana – The Inner Path of Teaching Yoga core module is broad in scope, touching on a wide range of topics to help solidify your teachings, as well as spark new areas of interests. The course is designed to deepen your knowledge, inspire you, elevate you, support you to evolve as a teacher and help you choose your path for further specialist training. Some of the topics we offer within this core module are subjects that you may then choose to study in more depth as modules on our 300-hr training. We generally recommend doing this module early on, but it is possible to opt to complete it at any point.

The course is led by Melanie Cooper and Gingi Lee, with appearances from numerous other teachers from our teaching faculty including Jennie Wadsten Sharma, Charli Van Ness and Ellie Grace.

Course Content

The mandatory Beyond Asana – The Inner Path of Teaching Yoga Core Module 1  is designed to be extensive in its scope, covering aspects of teaching that are relevant to all, whatever your focus. It will include the following topics (subject to change):

You will receive supporting resources in the form of PDFs, recorded content, workbooks and some presentation slides.

Lead Teachers

The course is led by Gingi Lee and Melanie Cooper with a number of guest specialist teachers.

Gingi Lee

Co-director of the Shala, Gingi founded the Shala in 1997 as one of London’s first dedicated yoga centres. Gingi began studying and teaching martial arts in the 1980s and he has been teaching yoga for over 25 years. He is one of the country’s most senior ashtanga yoga teachers and he has played a key role in popularising ashtanga yoga in the UK, having taught, trained and inspired many British yoga teachers. 

In 2016 he established the Shala School of Yoga teacher training programme. Read Gingi full Biography here.

Melanie Cooper (E-RYT 500)

Melanie has also been teaching yoga since 1997 and teaching on a wide variety of teacher trainings since 2010. She is passionate about the ability of yoga to heal and transform peoples’ lives and her deep connection to and love of yoga is evident in her teachings.

Melanie divides her time between the UK and Goa running teacher trainings and retreats in UK, Sweden, Crete and India. She is the author of ‘Teaching Yoga Adjusting Asana’. Read Melanie’s full biography here.
