A beginners class that will sculpt, tone and define your body, while improving core strength, breathing and mobility

Beginners Pilates

In West Norwood & Dulwich

Often described as 'intelligent exercise', Pilates is a highly effective movement class that will will sculpt, tone and define your body, while also improving your strength, balance and mind body connection.

The focus in this beginners level Pilates class is on improving your core strength, muscle strength, breathing and mobility to create a body that you understand, can use effectively and is balanced. This is accomplished by understanding how the human body works and moves. When movement becomes altered through muscle weakness or injury, faulty movement patterns occur which over time will lead to poor alignment and pain. Pilates will look for those poor movement patterns and seek to change them, thereby healing dysfunction and pain, and then continuing to build good balanced strength and mobility. The results are often profound.

This unique exercise system has obvious benefits for those with back pain, existing injuries and injury prevention, older adults, those with postural requirements such as pregnant and postnatal Mums as well as experienced athletes and exercisers who want to maintain a strong balanced body.

The Pilates classes are mat work based using small pieces of equipment such as bands and soft balls. Movements are highly focused and precise. Each class will include the 8 principles of Pilates (Concentration, Relaxation, Alignment, Breathing, Core Strength, Coordination, Flowing movement, Stamina) and the number of participants is limited to allow as much individual attention as possible.

  • If you are suffering/have suffered from a medical condition (including heart condition, chest pains, dizziness, high blood pressure) or a serious injury, it is essential you first consult your doctor before joining classes. Please then discuss this with us before booking so we can advise you on a personalised programme.
  • Minor health issues and injuries should be discussed with your teacher before the class. Please arrive 10 minutes early to discuss.
  • The classes are suitable for pregnant women of all stages who have previous experience of Pilates. From 16+ weeks some exercies are contra-indicative and the class will need to be modified so please come 10 minutes early to discuss your pregnancy with the teacher before your first class. Please note that Diveen Henry is not insured to teach pregnant women in her class so we request that you do not attend her classes whilst pregnant.
  • Pilates is one of the best forms of exercise for post-natal rehabilitation. Post-natal mothers must have had their six week check before attending class. They may attend any of the classes but are advised to arrive ten minutes early to discuss. Women wishing to attend with their babies can join our post-natal Pilates mother and baby class.

We recommend attending Level 1 classes regularly for a minimum of 6–8 weeks before moving on to Level 2. Check with your teacher to discuss when you are ready to move to the next level.
