Course Preparation & Homework

  • On Demand Content: Here is the link to the pre-recorded section  of the course which you will have access to from 1 January. It is beneficial to have already watched all the pre-recorded content before the live weekend session so you can ask any questions you may have. If times does not permit or you are booking late, you should prioritise these four chapters:
    – What is Yin Part 1 & 2
    – Contraindications & Cautions

    – Key Points When Teaching
    – Forward Folds Practical Anatomy
  • Quizzes
    – We have created eight short quizzes to go with each of the theory videos (not for the anatomy)
    – You can find the quizzes HERE. (this can also be found in the on demand folder)
    – Be sure to click “submit” to save your quiz

    – Completion of the quizzes is required for the certificate

  • Practice:
    • If you are joining online, please arrange for a partner or volunteer to practice the assists (that Melanie will be teaching) with. If you are unable to do so, you will receive the recording to review and practise on your own later.

    • The most important homework – Practice! Aim for 3 times per week for around 20 min to 1 hour. If you like: have a look at the different meridians we can work with in Yin Yoga – what they mean in terms of physical, mental and emotional issues. There are short clips on Melanie’s YouTube channel giving the basic in info on the meridians and how they can affect us physically, mentally and emotionally. You can chose which meridian resonates with you and use the practice sessions provided in the pre-recorded content.
  • Book Report: Yin practice: Read ONE of these books:
    – Brightening our inner skies, Yin and Yoga by Norman Blair
    – The complete guide to Yin Yoga by Bernie Clark
    – Insight Yoga by Sarah Powers (It doesn’t have to be the latest edition.)
Write approx. 100 words about your thoughts about a yin book of your choice.
Only Melanie will read the homework.
The only thing you have to do is to note what you liked and what resonates with you. (100 words approx.) Also write down any questions that might arise.
  • Ideas Behind Yin: Write a short outline (100 words approx..) about what yin yoga means to YOU. This will form the basis of making your practice your own and making your teaching more authentically you.
  • Additional reading: optional
    – If you’re interested in the anatomy side of things, we recommend – “Illustrated Yoga Anatomy” by our colleague Stu Girling
    – “Your Body Your Yoga” by Bernie Clark
    – “The Functional Anatomy of Yoga” by David Keil.

Homework needs to be submitted no later than the
28 February. Certificates will be issued soon after.

What to Bring

  • Be comfortable! Lounge around in soft pants and messy hair if you like! The main thread throughout the training is NO PERFORMANCE: if an exercise doesn’t feel good for example, you don’t have to do it.
  • a water bottle
  • notepad & pen
  • phone charger if you would like to record on your phone
  • yoga mat – this can be stored at the Shala while the course is running (If you forget your mat, you may use a studio mat)
  • if you wish to bring a packed lunch you may store this in the fridge – there are plenty of eateries in the area (see link from button below).
  • all other props are provided

Yoga Props

  • During the course we will explore the use props to find ways of making the poses work for different body types. We will also cover working without props.

  • If you’re in studio all props are provided

  • If you’re joining online, this blog post covers what props we recommend and cheap/free ways of improvising if you don’t have them

IN STUDIO | Access to the Shala & Studio Etiquette

    • The access code to the door at street level is 0119 (there are two keypads at the door, please use the keypad on the right)
    • The access code to the door on the third floor is C1045 (top lock)
    • If the door does not open, then the bottom lock is locked, and you will need to wait until a member of staff arrives
    • Please save these codes on your phone. A member of staff may not be available to let you in if you are running late, etc.
    • You can read more useful information (including transportation and food and accommodation recommendations) from the button link below
    • arrive 10-15 minutes early so we can start promptly at 10 am. It is very disruptive for the tutors and the group if students arrive partway through our first session
    • note that the reception area is a food free zone
    • keep the studios tidy during the training – it is not always possible for our cleaners to get in during these intensive training periods
    • please refrain from mobile phone usage in the studios

VIRTUAL LIVESTREAM | Online Practicalities

    • The zoom link will be sent out one hour before the session starts.
    • Please do check your mailboxes as it may go to a spam/social/promotions folder.
    • Make sure the correct name is on your Zoom
    • Use the “raised hand” if you wish to speak
    • Keep yourself on MUTE at all times except when invited to speak
    • Be mindful of whether you’re talking more than others to allow quieter members of the group to contribute
    • Please also use the CHAT function to the whole group or to the tutor only if needs be
    • Keep your camera on if you are comfortable to do so as this creates a safer space for all
    • Please be aware that all sessions are recorded and shared with the attendees. Your visuals will not appear in the recording but any audio will.

Course Resources

  • As part of the course you get two full colour manuals: one on the theory and one giving details on the poses.  You can access the digital copy of the Manual HERE

For those attending in person you will be given a copy of the Poses manual when we meet

The theory manual you will be given a pdf – if you want to get this printed yourself via doxdirect  (Allow around five days for the printing and postage.)

For those online you’ll get the pdfs – it would be great if you could get the poses manual printed to use during the 2 days of live content

Teaching Practice

During the course we will divide the class into smaller groups, so you can practice teaching Yin Yoga without having to do it in front of the whole class.

If you’re joining online there are different ways to do it:

  • Breakout rooms: small groups, which you “enter” with 2 – 4 participants. You will take turns teaching.

  • Another option is that you practice teaching with someone in real life: for example, a family member or friend.

  • If you prefer another way: just let us know and we will find a solution together.

Attendance

  • In order to get a certificate, attendance is required for all sessions – but you can choose to be more or less “active” during the sessions.

  • If you miss session due to jobs / other commitments: contact us and we will do our best to find a solution for completing the hours.

  • If you’re joining online, we appreciate if you have your video switched on during the sessions, so that we can see you, for better communication and it builds a stronger community. But if you for any reason don’t feel comfortable with it you can switch it off of course but let us know beforehand.

HYBRID Course

  • Hybrid courses have the option to choose an IN STUDIO experience or to attend the same course via VIRTUAL LIVESTREAM
  • We do not offer the option to do a mixture of In Studio and Livestream on one course.
  • If you book a course and wish to switch from LIVESTREAM ONLINE to IN STUDIO, or vice versa, this is sometimes possible (space permitting). We require a minimum of 48 hours notice before the course start and there is an admin fee of £25 to switch.
  • Please note that the admin fee is applicable in all circumstances without exception.
  • It is difficult to predict which format students will opt for when a course is offered as a HYBRID course. As a result, we reserve the right to make a HYBRID course IN STUDIO only or LIVESTREAM only if the demand is not there for one format. If this is the case, you will be offered the option to transfer to the single format or be refunded.
