My first forays into yoga were through the encouragement of a childhood friends’ mother. Two young girls sitting in a class, stifling giggles as we made shapes and downward dogs, my yoga seed had been planted. I am forever thankful and grateful for that first introduction to yoga.
Later in life, a cautious return to a practice of yoga, I found dedicated teachers who would help to germinate and nourish my original seed.
13th March 1999; now a significant date regarding my yoga practice. This is the life-changing day when I walked into my first Ashtanga and Vinyasa class with Jennifer Dale and Sabel Thiam at Brockwell Lido in Brixton, South London.
The Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga system is the connection of breath to movement, movement to stillness and focus points, with the Vinyasa linking the seated asanas (physical postures).
From my original teachers, Jenny and Sabel, I have also been taught by a variety of wise and dedicated practitioners including John Scott, Dena Kingsburg, and Hamish Hendry. I continue to practice at the Shala studio in South London under the tutelage of Gingi Lee, the teacher of Jenny and Sabel, my teachers’ teacher is now my teacher.
Completing the first 200-hour teacher training course during the numerous Covid19 lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 at the Shala under the combined tutoring of Gingi Lee and Cath Roberts has ensured the fruits of over twenty years of practice will be harvested for the benefit of others. I look forward to not only the continual development of my own practice but advance a teaching practice with the seesaw effect of one enriching the other.
