Too much stress can be unhealthy, but we need some stress to create a healthy level of motivation and a push to resolve inevitable challenges and issues that are essential to our growth. Stress can be found in the workplace, at home, in relationships and has many external causes but it is often fuelled by thoughts and narrative in relation to the external stimulus. We are built with a well-honed stress response system, and usually if the stress passes, then this system can shift from high alert and action to a more restful and calm way of being.

Modern–day living provides many stressors, and compared to our ancestors these stressors are much less physical (ie it’s highly unlikely we are at threat from hungry predators), however contemporary stressors such as relationship woes, work stress and financial issues tend to linger in our stress system and therefore this system is either constantly activated or repeatedly activated. The constant high response of this system is a factor in some of the biggest health problems of our time, including diabetes and strokes as well as a myriad of other problems.

Ancient yogis observed the stress reduction benefits of yoga and now modern science does too. The opposite of stress is relaxation which is a direct benefit of practicing yoga. Contemporary life can often see workers constantly working due to a heavy load and range of demands but also due to technology, never being able to stop thinking and actioning work-based tasks.

Many workplaces now offer wellbeing programmes to staff in the form of Yoga related practices which can be extremely beneficial, however the type of class and experience of the teacher can greatly influence just how effective this intervention can be. Those that are feeling exhausted are not likely to benefit from a physically challenging yoga class, instead the focus should be on restoration and renewal. Yin Yoga is particularly beneficial as an antidote to our fast-paced, often hectic, lives, focusing on postures that provide support, rest and nourishment as well as an invitation to tune inwards. Regular yoga practice helps to balance our nervous system and support us to create an internal environment in the body and mind to promote renewal, which is ideal for those feeling burnt out and depleted.

By Rina Modi (Wellness Coach and Shala Teacher Training Consultant)

As a wellness coach, one of the most common features I see in people with anxiety is an overwhelming incapacity to cope with day-to-day life. Daily tasks that were once manageable become insurmountable, decision-making becomes almost impossible, and overthinking takes over. Worries about the future increase in frequency and intensity, alongside physical manifestations such as chest pain, fast and heavy breathing, agitation, restlessness and being in a state of high alert. Modern-day life comes with many worries, about our own lives, our loved ones, our community and our planet. Of course, as humans, it is inevitable that we will feel levels of fear, but fears can often dissipate, while anxiety can be pervasive and insidious. There are, however, many ways to help manage and reframe anxiety and indeed work towards living our lives more positively.

One of the most helpful ways of managing anxiety on a day-to-day level is to learn to calm the physiological chaos within to help us feel safer in our bodies and as a result feel safer in the world around us. “Grounding” is a technique rooted in staying firmly in the present moment – rather than being in the future wondering what could happen, what could go wrong, what threats are potentially in the environment, and how we might cope with those perceived threats. When we practise yoga postures, mindfulness, breathwork and the myriad of practices rooted in the well-being system of yoga, we learn to tune into our emotional landscape and notice what is happening inside our bodies, bringing us into the present moment. Once we start approaching our bodies with curiosity and kindness, we can start to cultivate awareness of what we need to re-orientate ourselves to the here and now rather than fixating on the anticipated future.

In terms of research, yoga works to inhibit the chemical messenger in the brain that involves the fear-based pathways associated with anxiety. The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine have found that yoga immediately increases GABA, a neurotransmitter that is responsible for calming and is low in people with anxiety.

By Rina Modi (Wellness Coach and Shala Teacher Training Consultant)

What is the brain’s most important job? Thinking? Feeling. Making us feel happy or sad, In fact it’s not any of the jobs you may associate with the brain.

The brain’s most important job is running a budget for your body.

Every thought we have, every action we take, every move we make is ultimately done in the service of regulating our body. The brain uses 20% of its oxygen at rest, and two thirds of that are used for sending signals up and down the neural pathways. The brain responds to two kinds of signals; those from the outside world (proprioceptive) and those from the body itself (interoceptive).

The brain uses incoming sensory data to estimate the body’s state and anticipate what will happen next. Upon predicting a demanding situation the brain will respond by signalling to the body’s resources to make changes – changing blood pressure, secreting hormones and metabolising glucose – in order to meet those need;

A bit like looking out the

window in the morning, anticipating rain and picking up an umbrella, the brain assesses the needs of the body. Although unlike selecting the correct clothes for the forecasted weather, your brain is budgeting resources like glucose, oxygen, salt and all the other nutrients it needs.

The technical term for this is allostasis. However, because humans have limited resources, every movement we take and every new thing we learn, draws upon these resources and the brain has to ask itself – is this a good investment?

Just like any company, the brain keeps track of the accounts within the body to ensure the overall budget is balanced. To maintain long-term good health, a brain must make additional investments in glucose and other resources such as sleep, exercise and activities that improve allostasis.

In some cases these expenditures might compound over time as is seen in Adverse Childhood Events, racism, domestic abuse and bullying.

When your body budget is overdrawn for too long your immune system pays the price – a chronic overdraft in your body budget sets the scene for chronic illness.
