Jivamukti Yoga Classes
IN STUDIO in West Norwood / West Dulwich, South London
The style of Jivamukti Yoga is a unique integrated approach to practicing Yoga, the foundation of which is a physical vinyasa practice, where postures are linked with breath in a flowing form. Expect a moderately strong vinyasa based practice with aa sprinkling of chanting, philosophy and meditation, hands on assists, and a deep final relaxation. All accompanied by an uplifting playlist.
Classes are structured to incorporate the five central tenets of Jivamukti yoga: scripture (shastra), devotion (bhakti), nonviolence (ahimsa), music (nāda) and meditation (dhyana). The method emphasises the original sanskrit word ‘asana’ as seat, connection to the Earth, and the method is rooted in developing ahimsa (the practice of non-violence) and cultivating a compassionate lifestyle. Postures are practiced in a way that deepens awareness of ones connection to the Earth.
Jivamukti was founded in New York in 1984 by Sharon Gannon and David Life. The name Jivamukti comes from two sanskrit words; Jiva meaning individual soul and mukti meaning liberation.
“The name Jivamukti Yoga reflects the fact that it is possible to have a beneficial and fulfilling life in the world, and also progress spiritually-perhaps even attaining liberation (Samadhi) while living.” – Sharon Gannon and David Life
