Weekend Forest Retreat

Weekend Forest Retreat - 30 September to 2 October 2022

Gingi Lee and Liz Lark will be co-hosting this nourishing and uplifting weekend retreat set in the heart of the beautiful Ashdown Forest, just an hour’s train journey or drive out of South London. There will be seven yoga sessions across three days days including energising flow yoga, relaxing Yoga Nidra, pranayama, chanting and meditation, all in a simple and peaceful setting. Between sessions, there will be three locally sourced vegetarian meals a day plus the opportunity to explore the stunning Ashdown Forest.

‘Return to Yourself’, the theme of this retreat, is a song by Deep Forest, which Gingi and Liz’s teacher Derek Ireland would play whilst practising Astanga in The Practice Place, Crete. This is where Gingi and Liz first met and trained together through the 1990’s. Gingi and Liz now both have reconnected again in the Ashdown Forest, the Tree of Life calls them back to their roots.

Your teachers

Gingi and Liz both trained with Derek Ireland in the 1990s and were greatly influenced by ashtanga in their early years of teaching. Over the 25+ years of teaching, they have both diversified from traditional ashtanga and cultivated their own style of teaching which draws on a broad range of influences . Since their days living and working together at the Practice Place in Crete, their lives have interwoven in and out, co-teaching at the first Shala in Battersea (then known as the Sangam), working together on a 200-hour teacher training programme at Shala School of Yoga and now that they find themselves living in the same corner of Sussex, co-creating and offering this retreat.

Their teaching styles complement one another, connected through their past teaching history and still very much guided by the teachings of their charismatic teacher Derek Ireland.

About your stay

Emerson College is a nature inspired Explorative Creative learning centre in the heart of Forest Row. A biodynamic farm shop and café  is attached within walking distance. It sits within a 22-acre Botanic Garden with beautiful ponds, lawns and flower beds, a vegetable garden, an apple orchard and a wood full of bluebells in spring. All the land is managed biodynamically with many rare trees and over 100 medicinal plants, all of which creates an enchanting environment. The magical Ashdown Forest with its many walking trails lies just beyond.

The venue is simple, natural, peaceful, with lots of light and space.

The kitchen garden supplies the kitchen with fresh vegetables, salads and herbs. Any food that is not grown in the garden, is sourced locally and organically to create nourishing vegetarian meals. Gluten free and vegan diets can be catered for on request and for those with other special diets self-catering facilities are available.

Single rooms are in shared student chalet-style houses, with shared bathroom facilities. The rooms are simply furnished, rustic, quiet and comfortable.

  • All rooms are single occupancy. We may be able to book one or two twin rooms on request.
  • Bedrooms have shared toilets and showers.
  • Some bedrooms have a wash basin.
  • Bed linen and towels are provided and are included in the price.
  • Free WIFI is available in designated areas of the venue

Treatments are available from Pete Roberts who offers a full range of treatments and diagnosis. The main treatment he uses is the Trager approach which is a lovely way of passively moving the body in all plains to create a “wave of release” and freedom that heals deep into the core of being. It soothes the nervous system and encourages para sympathetic response which over time helps take the body out of “fight flight” response.

He also works with rehab of injuries or chronic disorders and helps clients integrate mental and physical well being. Pre Book directly with Pete
