Yoga Deep Dive | Session 1

This session can be attended by anybody, as a stand-alone workshop or as an optional module on our 300-hour programme in conjunction with our Foundation Yoga Philosophy course.  

Course Overview

Sādhus, Kālāmukhas, Aghoris, Tantra. Sādhus (f. sādhvīs) are the religious ascetics of South Asia, also known as Jogīs/Yogīs. There are many sects of them. The Kālāmukha and the Kāpālika were very radical sādhus, living on ther margins of society. In modern times, the Aghoris represent the radical path. It was primarily Kāpālikas who developed Tantric rites, which eventually flourished all over Asia, between the 5th and 13 centuries CE.

Sūfīs, Tibetan yoga, medieval yoga texts (main focus on Haṭhapradīpikā). Sūfīs, the mystics of Islam, spread throughout north India in the early medieval period. In many ways they are similar to Hindu sādhus; some practised yoga

Practicalities

  • A 200-hour yoga teacher training is usually a prerequisite for joining any of our Level 2 trainings but not essential 
  • This course can be taken as a stand-alone course or as part of our 300-YA accredited programme
  • The course VIRTUAL LIVESTREAM with catch up sessions available for 7 days if you cant attend
  • If you do the Yoga Philosophy Foundations training and 3 deep dives you will gain a 20hr certificate and five deep dives for a 30 hr Certificate with Yoga Allicance
  • Once you have completed your 300-hour training you can register as a RYT 500 teacher

Teacher Bio

Dr Matthew Clark

Yoga Philosophy Teacher

Dr Matthew Clark (MA, PhD) has been a Research Associate at the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) since 2004. Prior to that he taught Hinduism there between 1999 and 2003. Since 2002 he has been lecturing on yoga at yoga centres in the UK, Europe, Israel, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the USA. To date, he has presented lectures at yoga retreats, workshops and teacher-training courses for twenty-five different yoga teachers and organisations.

Matthew has published articles and books on yoga, soma and sādhus (yogis). His PhD, on a sect of sādhus (saṃnyāsīs), was published in 2006. His recent book, entitled The Tawny One: Soma. Haoma and Ayahuasca, was published in July 2017. Matthew has been visiting India since 1977, visiting around 1,000 pilgrimage sites and trekking about 2,000 miles in the Himalayas. He first engaged with yoga in the mid-1970s, and since 1990 has been regularly practising a form of Ashtanga Yoga. Matthew also writes songs, plays guitar, and makes records as Mahabongo.

Pricing

All of our Deep Dives cost £40 per session including access to recordings for 7 days after

  • The deposit is non refundable but can be transferred to another person 
  • The remaining balance is refundable up to 1 month before the event.  
  • Cancellation 2 - 4 weeks before the event: 50 % of the balance in refund only
  • Cancellation less than 2 weeks before the event: no refund


Trainings at the Shala are run independently and all payments for training services are accepted on behalf of the individual teachers. 

  • The livestreamed elements of this training will be recorded and anyone who is unable to attend this part can email us to request a link to the recording, which will be available for 7 days after the event. 
  • Late cancellations and no shows will be charged as if you had attended. 
  • In the event that a training is cancelled by the Shala you will be offered a refund or the option to be transferred to an alternative event
  • The course leaders and the Shala reserve the right to photograph or film during the programme and to use these images for our website and marketing purposes
