Taught by Ben Wolff, founder of The Breathing School and The Breathing Institute, and passionate disseminator of the power of the breath, this fascinating and hugely informative online course is now in its sixth edition. It is the culmination of a huge body of work, firmly rooted in science, that Ben has researched and studied for nearly a decade. The course can be attended as a stand-alone CPD or as an optional module on our 300-hour programme. Note that material is sent out every Monday and livestream sessions are every Saturday. If you join the course a little late, material will be sent out to you the day that you join.

Course Overview

The Shala School of Yoga, in association with Ben Wolff, presents this online foundation course for anyone interested in learning about the incredible healing and stabilising power of the Breath, based around understanding an Eight-Breath Formula. It is suitable for:

  • yoga and mindfulness teachers wishing to deepen their knowledge of breathwork (note that this is NOT Pranayama)
  • therapists, life coaches and health care professionals who wish to use the breath to support themselves and therapeutic relationships
  • practitioners wanting to enhance their personal practice
  • the general public who would like to learn simple tools to support living well in busy and stressful times
  • those wishing to overcome chronic health problems or to support a loved one

The Breathing School explores a serious subject in an inspiring, compassionate and accessible way. The month-long course is structured to include:

  • A 90 minute livestream introduction covering the basics and how the course works
  • 4 hours of pre-recorded material sent out each week for four weeks (16 hours in total)
  • 2 hour interactive livestreamed online sessions over four weekends, which includes practicing the breaths, Q & A and "Breathing Circles" where you have the opportunity to share/teach the breathing practices to each other
  • a written assignment in which you attend and write up observations of three virtual Help For.. workshops, led by The Breathing Institute. 

To qualify for a 30-hour Yoga Alliance certificate, all three elements of the course must be completed along with the Breathing Circles. If you are attending the course for personal, rather than professional reasons, you may wish to opt out of the Breathing Circles and the assignment. The first part of the livestreamed sessions (excluding the Breathing Circles) will be recorded and made available if you are unable to make all the dates. Where possible we strongly encourage you to join this part of the course live.

 

Course Content

This training will explore how to relax and prepare the body to receive the Breath. Specifically, the course will be divided into themes and you will be taught the eight breaths for the practical self-management of:

  1. stress, anxiety & fear
  2. panic attack & emergencies
  3. hypertension & hypotension, high & low blood pressure
  4. breathlessness, asthma, COPD, Long Covid & allergies
  5. chronic fatigue
  6. chronic pain
  7. depressive moods
  8. sleeplessness & insomnia

We will also look at how allowing optimum breathing patterns can enhance cognitive function, physical energy and a balanced awareness. Practices will be supported by current research, neuro-anatomy and physiology so that attendees can understand the crucial connection between breath-body-brain integration. Additionally, we will explore breath and interpersonal relationships and how breathing affects feelings and behaviour (and thus the way we think about ourselves and relate to others, communicate and behave). 

Note that the content of this course is very different to Pranayama. 

Practicalities


  • This course can be taken as a stand-alone course or as part of our 300-YA accredited programme
  • If you complete all aspects of the course, including the written assignment, you will receive 30 Yoga Alliance accredited Level 2 hours as a stand-alone course or towards our 300-hour training. If you complete the 300-hour training you can register as a RYT 500 teacher
  • This is a blended course spanning 4 weeks. Recordings will be sent to you week by week which should be watched in advance of live scheduled sessions each weekend. The links each week are valid for 7 days. For those who cannot attend some of the livestreamed dates – Zoom video recordings are made available for seven days after the event – so it is not necessary to attend the livestreamed sessions although it is highly recommended
  • If you wish to gain the full 30 hours of YA accreditation, there is a written assignment to submit. This involves writing up observations of three Help For... workshops (500–750 words per workshop) to be submitted 31 July to Ben Wolff. Feedback on these will be given to you directly by the teachers and certificates will be issued once all students have received feedback. Attendance of these workshops is at an additional cost for which you will receive a 20% discount (discounted cost per workshop is £20-£24).

  • Anyone registered for the event, whether they attend live or not, will automatically get the 7-day catch up links (on Monday afternoon) plus audio recordings of the whole course, which are valuable resources to consolidate the learning
  • An illustrated manual accompanies the course, which will be sent (as an electronic file) one week before the start date.

  • All you need to attend the course is a laptop or tablet with access to Zoom. The course is delivered in a variety of learning styles to suit all; experiential and cognitive, and via illustrative case studies and discussion.

Ben Wolff

Ben Wolff is a  Breathwork Teacher, Yoga Teacher, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Dream Yoga practitioner with a profound depth of experience and understanding in his field. He is an engaging, compassionate and hugely knowledgeable teacher, whose enthusiasm for his subject is infectious and inspiring. 

Ben has a remarkable understanding of contemporary scientific research into meditation, neuroscience and other fields related to Breathwork. Brought on by his recovery from serious illness and nearly a decade of continuous research and investigation, Ben shares his findings from both ancient wisdom traditions and modern science in ways that are open and accessible to everyone.   • The cost is £195 + VAT for the full training. A non-refundable deposit of £50 + VAT is required on booking.

It does not include the three Help For... Workshops, which you will need to book to do your assignment (the cost for these will be an additional £60-£75 depending on the workshop

    Trainings at the Shala are run independently and all payments for training services are accepted on behalf of the individual teacher. 

    • The livestreamed elements of this training will be recorded and anyone who is unable to attend this part can email us to request a link to the recording, which will be available for 7 days after the event. 
    • Late cancellations and no shows will be charged as if you had attended. 
    • In the event that a workshop is cancelled by the Shala you will be offered a refund or the option to be transferred to an alternative event

    In order to gain a Kite Mark of Approval to teach this methodology and become a member of The Breathing Institute, you will need to do the following after completion of the Breathing School and Breathing Circles:

    • complete the 10 Questions
    • arrange a 121 session with Ben Wolff*, where you will specifically agreed what you may go on to teach in line with your specific area of interests and expertise
    • you will then be invited to become a member of The Breathing Institute. A small fee  will be charged to cover website costs, should you wish us to feature your biog and work on the Breathing Institute website.
    • on collective agreement with Ben, and in suitable circumstances, a chance to collaborate in a workshop at The Shala with Ben may be possible and arranged. In this instance a separate agreement will be issued.
    • to maintain membership of the Breathing Institute, members will be required once a year to have a 121 follow up with Ben to receive ongoing support, access to latest research and information and to check in on protocol and troubleshoot problems.
    • opportunities to continue to work with The Shala directly may also be afforded, at the discretion of The Shala and under separate agreements.
