This 4-day course covers a variety of aspects of yin yoga including learning to teach inclusively and safely. The course can be attended as a stand-alone Yoga Alliance accredited course or as an optional module on our 300-hour programme.

Catch up recordings will be available for the duration of the course for you to recap and revisit as well as for an additional 2 weeks after completion of the course. In exceptional circumstance you can submit a request for an extension for access but note this will be at an admin cost of £25.

Course Overview

Join Melanie Cooper on this training where you will learn how to teach yin yoga in a way that is inclusive and safe for everyone. Many students find this slower type of practice is a gateway into their inner world, helping them to connect and go deep inside so they can truly rejuvenate though the practice of yin. Adding this training to your skills can help you expand your horizons as a teacher and for many teaching yin offers a positive change from teaching faster more yang based classes. . The course will cover a wide range of topics from sequencing to anatomy and fascia and meridians. From the training you will learn:

  • how to practice and teach yin poses
  • how to plan a yin based class
  • how to use props effectively
  • the theory and science behind the practice
  • support in finding your own unique teaching style
  • how to adapt the practice for different body types and personalities

Course Content

You will learn:

  • how to teach poses with and without props 
  • how yin relates to the nervous system and the brain
  • about the meridians and energy systems
  • to understand fascia
  • about anatomy in relation to yin 
  • how different body parts respond to poses
  • sequencing for specific meridians
  • how to plan a class and the use of silence
  • how to find your voice as a teacher 
  • about updated research on yin theory and science 
  • how to develop your classes for pregnancy, injuries and hyper-mobility
  • about contraindications and modifications
  • lots of practice in a non-judgemental and non-dogmatic environment

There will also be the opportunity to reconnect to your own practice 


  • A 200-hour yoga teacher training is usually a prerequisite for joining any of our Level 2 trainings 
  • This course can be taken as a stand-alone course or as part of our 300-YA accredited programme
  • The course is "hybrid" and you can opt to take it IN STUDIO or as VIRTUAL LIVESTREAM for those unable to travel to the Shala in South London
  • You will receive 40 accredited Level 2 hours as a stand-alone course or towards our 300-YA accredited programme; 32 contact hours plus 8 hours of prep and homework
  • Once you have completed your 300-hour training you can register as a RYT 500 teacher

Melanie Cooper (E-RYT 500)

Melanie has been teaching yoga since 1997 and her love of yoga shines through strongly in her teaching. In recent years, she has been solely committed to offering teacher trainings and retreats.

Melanie is a genuine and down to earth teacher who brings a vast breadth of knowledge to her trainings. She offers a place where you can find what works for you, a place where you will be welcomed as you are with no judgement or expectations – where you can find the practice and way of teaching that is truly right for you.

Melanie divides her time between the UK and Goa running teacher trainings and retreats in UK, Sweden, Crete and India. She is the author of 'Teaching Yoga Adjusting Asana’.

  • The cost is £495 for the full 4-day training IN STUDIO (or LIVESTREAM ONLINE if you are unable to travel to the studio). 
  • A non-refundable deposit of £150 is required on booking.

  • Note it is sometimes possible to change from IN STUDIO to VIRTUAL but not generally possible to change from VIRTUAL to IN STUDIO
  • If you do not pay in full, please ensure that you save your credit card details so we can process the final payment of £345. This will happen 21 days before the start of the course and a receipt will be sent to you when the payment has been taken.
  • 300 hour students get a 10% discount on this training if they have booked three trainings with us including the core. Email us if this is the case and the discount will be applied when the balance is taken
  • Students who have already completed this course who want to study again as a refresher pay 50% of the full price cost

  • The deposit is non refundable but can be transferred to another person 
  • The remaining balance is refundable up to 1 month before the event.  
  • Cancellation 2 - 4 weeks before the event: 50 % of the balance in refund only
  • Cancellation less than 2 weeks before the event: no refund
Please note that all course material is the Intellectual Property of the teacher(s). Therefore intellectual content including illustrations, imagery and videos can not be reproduced. This includes re-writing or reproducing in your own words to use in a training workshop, teacher training or any other public event other then classes. We kindly ask that you contact us to discuss and gain permission  if you are intending on using this training content for any public trainings so we can discuss the ramifications, as well as see if any collaboration is possible.

We are fully committed to providing the most accurate experience on the course based upon the description and we encourage open and honest communication throughout. Should you wish to make any complaints or raise any issues, please follow the procedure laid out below so we can find a resolution as quickly as possible.

You may involve someone else to support you at any stage.

Stage One: Speak to the teacher training manager by emailing teachertraining@theshala.co.uk concerned within 3 days after your experience and try to resolve informally. The teacher training manager will aim to come back to you within 2 working days with a resolve. If you are not satisfied with the response you have received, follow stage two.

Stage Two: Outline the details of your complaint by email to the teacher training manager who will investigate the complaint. Your complaint will be acknowledged within 3 working days from the date it is received. Please include the following information in your email:

  • The date(s) that the incident happene
  • Class/course/workshop the complaint stems from
  • Why you are complaining and what resolution you would expect?
  • Whether you want to make the complaint anonymously or not ( in the case of anybody at risk we have the right to break confidentiality in order to try and prevent the risk)

  • The teacher training manager will then investigate the complaint through reviewing the details, and in some cases possibly writing to the tutor or person about whom the complaint has been made. The letter will outline the main elements of your complaint and ask for a full written response.

    At this point, if further relevant information comes to light, you may be asked for your comments to ensure the investigator has a balanced understanding. When your response has been received, the investigator will consider all the information available to them and make a decision.

    The response will include the following information:

  • Details of the investigation
  • A decision about whether the complaint was upheld or not
  • The reason for the decision
  • The re-dress, if appropriate, will be offered to you, for example, an apology, additional help or directing you to other sources of advice or support
  • Any other action that may be taken in light of the complaint

  • If it is not possible to provide a full answer to your complaint within 30 working days, the letter will outline reasons why and give a date by which a full answer is expected.

    Trainings at the Shala are run independently and all payments for training services are accepted on behalf of the individual teacher. 

    • Any livestreamed elements of trainings are recorded and anyone who is unable to attend this part can email us to request a link to the recording, which will be available for 7 days after the event. 
    • Late cancellations and no shows will be charged as if you had attended. 
    • In the event that a training is cancelled by the Shala you will be offered a refund or the option to be transferred to an alternative event
    • The course leaders and the Shala reserve the right to photograph or film during the programme and to use these images for our website and marketing purposes
