Yoga Nidra Teacher Training | Hybrid | 30 hours

25-27 November 2022 IN STUDIO or VIRTUAL LIVESTREAM | with Melanie Cooper & Jennie Wadsten (Online Support)

This 3-day Hybrid course covers a variety of aspects of Yoga Nidra including the main techniques and schools of modern Nidra and a chance to prepare and practice Nidra scripts. It can be attended as a stand-alone course or as an optional module on our 300-hour programme

Jennie and Melanie are nurturing, caring teachers that are there to guide and support. Over 500 students have attended this Yoga Nidra course (both online or in person) and the courses have cultivated a supportive network and community. This is an interactive course where you are encouraged to ask questions and get support both before, during and after the course, with a chance to practice teaching with expert constructive and supportive feedback.

Course Overview

This three-day immersion into Yoga Nidra is an opportunity to learn to teach the beautiful practice of Yoga Nidra, with two inspiring international teachers, Melanie Cooper and Jennie Wadsten.

Yoga Nidra is considered by some to be the meditative heart of yoga, where deep transformation is possible when we enter the enchanting space between waking and dreaming. This training course will cover the definition of Yoga Nidra along with the history, philosophy, science, modern schools, how to write scripts, and everything you need to get started teaching. Our approach is non-dogmatic and it's important to us to have an individual approach, so you'll get lots of feedback and ongoing support even after the course has finished. The emphasis is on empowering you to find YOUR authentic way of teaching Yoga Nidra and to obtain knowledge to see what is needed for different students; there isn’t one size fits all for this practice (or any style really!).

As part of the course, students are offered small group mentoring sessions (max 10 people per group) every second month for up to a year. Those who are teaching often find mentoring an invaluable resource that helps them to implement what they have learnt in their classes. The sessions also provide a supportive space for whatever may arise in relation to your teaching and practice. Important themes such as cultural appropriation, self care and ethics will be explored. The programme is also aimed at providing teachers with a supportive community held by experienced teachers and peer-to-peer support.

By the end of the course, participants will have a deeper understanding of Nidra as a practice and will have had an opportunity to reconnect with their own practice and recharge. Qualified yoga teachers will be equipped to begin teaching this deeply rejuvenating and meditative practice.

  • If joining us online, a few people have expressed concerns about noise/disturbance in the background. Most of the time when you’re listening you will be on mute – so no one can hear what’s happening in the background, and if a pet or child runs around a bit that’s very welcome!
  • Note that there are no written tests and you don't have to "prove" anything, rather, we are interested in seeing that you have gained an understanding and knowledge that you can apply to each individual student depending on their needs. You are not expected to perform, rather to learn and to spark your interest in embarking or continuing on this fascinating journey as a yoga teacher.

Teacher Bio

Melanie and Jennie have worked together for 10 years (yoga teacher trainings and retreats in India and Europe) and they have 40 years of experience of teaching yoga classes and trainings between them. They have extensive experience and what they keep coming back to is how important it is to be authentic, to find "your voice" as a teacher and to have the courage to be YOURSELF when you are teaching.

Melanie Cooper E-RYT 500 - Lead Teacher

Melanie has been teaching yoga since 1997 and teaching Yoga Nidra since 2004. Her love of yoga comes through strongly in her teaching. She is passionate about the ability of Yoga Nidra to heal and transform peoples’ lives. Her focus is making it right for everyone individually.

Melanie divides her time between the UK and Goa, practicing and teaching yoga and sometimes you can see her Bollywood dancing on the beach. She runs teacher trainings and retreats in UK, Sweden, Crete and India and is the author of Teaching Yoga Adjusting Asana. View Melanie's website

Jennie Wadsten E-RYT 500 - Online Support Teacher

Jennie fell in love with yoga in 1997 and has been teaching full time since 2005.

Yoga Nidra came into her life in 2007 and became her main practice some years later due to illness. Yoga Nidra was an important part of her healing path back to wellness and continues to be a source of rejuvenation and balance.

Over the years she has practiced many styles of Yoga Nidra and she strongly believes that there are many truths in yoga; what is “right” is individual. Her intention with her teaching is to guide the students into learning how to communicate with their authentic self. She encourages curiosity and to cultivate awareness and gratitude; to make it easier to access these qualities into our everyday life, off the mat.

She lives in Goa, India and Stockholm, Sweden. View Jennie's website.

It is essential for us to address oppressive practices in the yoga world in general and particularly – in the light of recent events –  in relation to Yoga Nidra. We acknowledge that abuse is very real in the yoga world and we have been contemplating how to navigate our way through this in relation to Yoga Nidra Teacher Training.

These are our thoughts:

Yoga Nidra is such a rich, healing, and positive practice for so many and it doesn’t belong to an “abuser” but many traditions such as Buddhism, ancient Philosophy, and modern Psychology.

We don’t wish to take this ancient practice away from teachers and practitioners by not offering this training, particularly given the levels of anxiety, burnout, and insomnia we are seeing in current times.

The course we run is carefully tailored to give teachers knowledge that is a distinct shift away from “teacher as guru and student as a follower” to a more collaborative approach that equips the teachers with the skills to be facilitator and support to the practitioner.

We condemn the abuse of all kinds and stand in solidarity shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters who have been abused. We are committed to encouraging debate and calling out any oppressive practices past, recent, and future in the yoga world

Melanie Cooper our Yoga Nidra & lead level 2 teacher has also written a personal blog on her experiences and thoughts on this subject matter

We are fully committed to providing the most accurate experience on the course based upon the description and we encourage open and honest communication throughout. Should you wish to make any complaints or raise any issues, please follow the procedure laid out below so we can find a resolution as quickly as possible.

You may involve someone else to support you at any stage.

Stage One: Speak to the teacher training manager by emailing concerned within 3 days after your experience and try to resolve informally. The teacher training manager will aim to come back to you within 2 working days with a resolve. If you are not satisfied with the response you have received, follow stage two.

Stage Two: Outline the details of your complaint by email to the teacher training manager who will investigate the complaint. Your complaint will be acknowledged within 3 working days from the date it is received. Please include the following information in your email:

  • The date(s) that the incident happene
  • Class/course/workshop the complaint stems from
  • Why you are complaining and what resolution you would expect?
  • Whether you want to make the complaint anonymously or not ( in the case of anybody at risk we have the right to break confidentiality in order to try and prevent the risk)

  • The teacher training manager will then investigate the complaint through reviewing the details, and in some cases possibly writing to the tutor or person about whom the complaint has been made. The letter will outline the main elements of your complaint and ask for a full written response.

At this point, if further relevant information comes to light, you may be asked for your comments to ensure the investigator has a balanced understanding. When your response has been received, the investigator will consider all the information available to them and make a decision.

The response will include the following information:

  • Details of the investigation
  • A decision about whether the complaint was upheld or not
  • The reason for the decision
  • The re-dress, if appropriate, will be offered to you, for example, an apology, additional help or directing you to other sources of advice or support
  • Any other action that may be taken in light of the complaint

  • If it is not possible to provide a full answer to your complaint within 30 working days, the letter will outline reasons why and give a date by which a full answer is expected.

Trainings at the Shala are run independently and all payments for training services are accepted on behalf of the individual teachers.

    • The livestreamed elements of this training will be recorded and anyone who is unable to attend this part can email us to request a link to the recording, which will be available for 7 days after the event. In exceptional circumstance you can submit a request for an extension for access but note this will be at an admin cost of £25.
    • Late cancellations and no shows will be charged as if you had attended.
    • In the event that a workshop is cancelled by the Shala you will be offered a refund or the option to be transferred to an alternative event
