This afternoon workshop sets the foundations of your yoga practice and provides a focused introduction to yoga and its benefits. These courses are ideal for those who are completely new to yoga as well as for those who are looking to reestablish their practice. The workshop paves the way for you to continue your practice in Level 1 classes.

There will be a brief overview on the background of yoga, what it is, the benefits and how to apply it as an essential tool for life. The workshop will then introduce students to a sequence of asana (postures), breath control and core strength as well as elements of meditation, pranayama (breathwork) and relaxation. It will encourage you to learn to be receptive to your own level, speed and breath with a focus on:

  • synchronising breath to movement 
  • specific detail on alignment
  • building strength and flexibility
  • understanding the opposition between grounding and lifting
  • how to modify postures using props to suit your body
  • deep meditative relaxation process

This is an ideal way to establish and lay foundations for a safe and beneficial regular practice in which you can access the many benefits of yoga. There will be time to ask questions during the workshop. See our short film here for more on the benefits of yoga.

Our regular Level 1 classes and Deep Release classes are also suitable for beginners.

  • Minor health issues and injuries should be discussed with your teacher before the class. Please arrive 10 minutes early to discuss.
  • If you are suffering/have suffered from a medical condition (including heart condition, chest pains, dizziness, high blood pressure) or a serious injury, it is essential you first consult your doctor before joining classes. Please then discuss this with us before booking so we can advise you on a personalised programme.

Workshops at the Shala are run independently and all payments for workshop services are accepted on behalf of the individual teacher. The teacher's terms are given below.

  • Purchases for workshops are non-refundable
  • Cancellations may be made online up to 24-hours before the start of the workshop in which case your Shala account will be credited and you will be able to rebook for the same workshop on a different date
  • Late cancellations and no shows will be charged as if you had attended
  • In the event that a workshop is cancelled you will be offered a refund or the option to be transferred to an alternative date
