Anyone who suffers from asthma, allergies or any kind of respiratory conditions knows how intimately connected the breath is with their problem. Aside from inhalers and anti-histamines though few have developed preventative breathing habits and skills to manage, control and even reverse their situation. It's a very misunderstood story as most people are unaware that the breath is the very first indicator of an upcoming attack. By changing our relationship and understanding of what to do with the breath we can gently and greatly improve our ability to breath, removing the constriction, tightness, breathless and panic and buy ourselves some calming breathing space instead.

Since Nobel Prize winner Otto Warburg pronounced in 1966 that "the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal cells by a fermentation of sugar" there has been acknowledgement of the relationship between oxygen and cancer in approximately 80 per cent of conditions. There is huge interest in hyperbaric treatment that also points to the influence oxygen may play. Regardless of the preventative effects this may have, what we do know is that breathing techniques influence and can moderate the difficulties that come with the necessary treatments people currently undergo. As a complementary method of caring the breath is a coping method par excellence.

Is anybody spared these universal hardships? Is there any possibility of "good grief?" As many of us become untrained nurses to our loved ones it can be a frightening, frustrating and lonely time. As a family, we are continuing to go through these issues and it astounds me how little there is out there for us, and how misunderstood the processes are. The breath may not be able to bring our loved ones back to life though it plays the most intimate part in all our lives, and while there is life there is breath. That breath can make things better, at least a little, for those around us and particularly for ourselves as we're preparing for the 'theatre of parting' and coping with caring.

We've probably all heard of the heart's natural pacemaker. Far fewer know about our breathing pacemaker. It's our breathing pacemaker that sets our heart pacemaker. In many cases palpitations and arrythmias aren't serious in themselves, however the affect they have on our peace of mind and quality of life can be. It can be really concerning, distracting and frightening to feel like the heart has a mind of its own and is doing its own thing. Balancing the breath can even out the randomness and bring back a more regular, pleasing heart function.

If you've been doubled up in spasms, can't go, can't stop going or sometimes all of the above you'll know its a miserable situation. Most medicines that we frequently take may work in the short term however very rarely remove the underlying conditions that are putting us through this in the first place. Although many people look to blame their diet there is often something more fundamental going on - the opinion the body has of the risk or fear in its environment. Very often this is a non-conscious over-reaction that causes unnecessary side effects as we temporarily shut down or impair our digestion. We can learn how to rectify this and massively improve our situations, through learning how to change our internal environment. Brain science has recently shown that the breath is connected to fear and memory. Change the breath and we change how this is expressed throughout our bodily systems.

The Breath for Life Series
An astonishing 95% of our energy comes in from the breath; 70% of what the body eliminates goes out through the breath. The breath, then, is the first place we should look to affect change. If a car isn't running properly, we check the engine. Science shows nearly everyone in our society is currently over-breathing, making this a number one culprit behind stress, insomnia and disturbed sleep, anxiety, depression and negative thinking, chronic pain, asthma, migraine headaches, panic attacks and even back problems and weight gain.
The optimal rate for adults to breathe is between 3 & 6 breaths a minute. We typically are taking between 12 and 20. The result is, we are clinically 80 per cent stressed before we've even got out of our chairs. By balancing the breath we can bring back balance to our systems and bring a balanced breath back to balance our lives. Researchers have found that most people use less than 20% of the surface area of their lungs. Simple practices can increase this three or four fold over a year. Its like having five gears to your car and never getting out of first.
